review 1: The subtitle states that this book is about art, inspiration, and the meaning of home. I didn't think it was really about any of that. Celeste isn't on a quest to find a nest. She just keeps finding herself homeless. She's on a quest to survive. Along the way she meets friends and enemies. Celeste's true super power is not that she can weave a basket but that she can find a solution to solve two problems at once. Twice she saves the lives of her bird friends while simultaneously aiding her human friends with their art. Amazing! How many real world problems are in need of a skilled diplomat such as this. I read this book to my nine-year-old son. He was most concerned by the scenes with the bullies harassing Celeste and the afterward which referred to extinct bird spe... morecies.
review 2: The illustrations really make this book work; they show Celeste's world in a way that the writing itself can't do completely. Celeste is a mouse living on a plantation where James John Audubon comes to study and paint birds. She befriends his teenage apprentice and learns about Audubon and both the joy and sadness of friendship along the way. I think this would be a great read aloud to 9 and younger, and excellent read to self for 8 and up. less
