review 1: While I was astonished to discover that one of my all-time favorite authors, Herman Wouk, was still alive and writing, The Lawgiver is Weak Wouk. Composed entirely of emails, letters, faxes, text messages, and other assorted 21st Century people-speak, I came to feel that the method outshone the message. Wouk shines at creating epics, with worldly details and personal heartbreak intertwined. This novel is shallow, and doesn't permit the reader to connect with the characters, who are only one dimensional. Unless this was Wouk's intention, to demonstrate how our modern methods of communication prevent us from truly knowing who anyone else is?
review 2: It was an enjoyable, quick read. Totally different than the other works I have read by him. Great characters; I
... more could hear them talking. I also loved getting to know a little of his wife and their life together. Touching. Perhaps he has had such a difficult time writing a book about Moses, because he can never do it justice in regards to what his Jewish religion has already taught him and I mean that with the highest respect. less
