review 1: I was fully prepared to like this book. But alas... did not. Let´s see. We have the setting (last days of nitrate fields). And pathetic characters (prosttitutes and old miners). But there is not plot. And my impression is that Mr. Rivera is misogynist ('bestial' to describe an obese woman, in my book didn't mix), and the naive conception that prostitutes are in the profession because they 'love it' is simplistic and so sexist!No es una novela, es una larguisima descripción, usando el lenguaje más rebuscado posible, se repite en exceso, y no me gusta la forma en que expone a las mujeres. Así que no.
review 2: Interesting story, well articulated, it starts overly complexly elaborated (probably a consequence of inexperience writing), but soon Rivera Letelier r... moreelaxes and lets the story flow better. Lives of miners and prostitutes in the north of Chile and the never-ending story of abuses by the mining industry to the men who are brave enough to dig into the earth's surface; and the women who support them. Worth a read, specially if you are looking to escape the clichés of south-american mainstream writers and searching for words of crude and pure honesty. less
