review 1: There isn't a whole lot of action in this volume as compared to the previous one. Instead, characterization is the focus. The Elric brothers are fleshed out through Al's struggle with his identity and the extended flashback of when they first left their hometown to be trained. We also see other characters getting set up to become major players in the volumes to come. So that's exciting.What bumps my score up from three stars to four is the death scene (and the funeral) that happens. Still punches me in the feels, even after all these years, and that is just evidence of good writing and characters.
review 2: Second FMA book. Still in Lab5 the Elric brother fight the armor guards. Al is taunted by Barry who makes him doubt if his soul is real. Meanwhil Ed ma... morenages to defeat the other armor but loses his arm just before Envy and Lust show up. Why they knew of Lab5, why they destroyed it but saved the Elric brothers?Winry goes to central to fix Ed. Al confronts Ed about him being real, nice brother moment. The 3 go to Rush Valley.Hughes is killed by Envy, looks like the homunculi are also villians. His funeral one really sad moment. Scar fights Glutony and is quite a Batle.The black Hayate story a nice comic pause. The rush Valley story with Panina and the angry old man not that interesting but serves as a reason to set up Winry in her aprenticeship.Ed and Al go see their teacher Izumi Curtis. We get to see a flashback to the past, how the Elrics learned Alchemy and trained with Izumi, how they lost their bodies, how Ed became a State alchemist.Greed appears.Another nice book, set ups the Homunculi as second villians. Also a lot of backstory on the Elrics. Nice cliffhanger ending. less
