review 1: Full Metal Alchemist is about Edward Elric and his little brother Alphonse trying to restore their bodies. When they were both young, their father left them without a warning and their mother died from a disease. Because of that, the boys decided to learn alchemy in order to bring their mother back to life. In their universe, alchemy is a special ability which lets them transform something in to something else for equivalent exchange. When they tried to resurrect their mother, they did not know what they got in to. Alphonse lost his body and to get his soul back, Edward had to lose an arm and a leg to transfer it to a body armor. After this incident, Edward got a metal arm and leg, and Alphonse was a walking body armor. The Boys new goal was now to get their previous bodie... mores. The boys trained their alchemy skills to find a way to get their bodies back, and went through a lot of adventures until they got to the end of their journey. There were a lot of strong points in the book, both emotional and action sequences. I can't recall any bad part and in general, it was an amazing series.I chose to read this book after some friends recommended it to me and they were incredibly right about it. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy adventure stories and enjoys both action and emotional sequences.
review 2: Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist, vol. 27 (ViZ, 2010)Fullmetal Alchemist ends exactly the way you expect it to—with a huge climactic battle that pretty much amounts to the entire fighting force against the Dwarf in the Flask, and then a “where are they now?” epilogue detailing the events of the days/weeks after the end of the last battle. It is not a distinctive conclusion in any way, but it is a satisfying one. Over the course of twenty-seven volumes, Arakawa's series never flagged, and that's impressive indeed. *** ½ less
