review 1: This one didn't seem as dark as some of the past installments. I do like how Nesser has his people solve the crimes...fishing, canoeing and eating ;) I can't say this one was much of a surprise to me - I thought the 'by chance' linking of the suspect due to a spelling error was a bit far fetched as I raised my eyebrows far earlier when one of those close to the camp had a slip of the tongue. However, I really like the police characters and Nesser does a good job of making the sect people unlikeable and unsympathetic. Will be interested to see how the shift to a bookshop affects the series.
review 2: Another Swedish noir detective by an author I enjoy. This one features what is becoming to be (to me) a recurrent theme in this genre -- evil pastors still popu
... morelating this very modern and liberal country. Here the detective is also of a mold, but one that I like; near retirement, irascible, often a solo operator. Here Inspector Van Veeteren is faced with two murders of two young nubile teenage girls at a religious summer camp run by a charasmatic pastor and his rather stern middle-aged woman acolytes. Soon the pastor is also murdered (although in real life almost no one is murdered in Sweden despit e the plethora of noir detective novels which must be near the topof its exports). But our irascible and deeply thoughtful detective figures it all out, although I had very few clues. less
