I'll Be There
review 1: A heart breaking but sweet novel about love, life and fate. It took me a while to get into it; the unique writing style is pretty but different to what you normally find in YA. But once I got going, I could not stop, with the ending as thrilling and nail biting as a crime novel. The multiple points of view really opens up the story, and it is clever that literally everything and everyone can have an effect on the storyline. A beautiful and poignant read that will resonate deeply with you.
review 2: This is a very sweet story that is beautifully written. It is by far my favorite FYABC selection to date. No supernatural warriors of any kind - yea! You could tell from the first page that the author had it all figured out. I suppose that is the truth of the ma
... moretter with almost all works. But sometimes you don't know it for sure right off the bat. This didn't feel like a story that was unfolding as you read it. It wasn't exactly suspenseful. Instead, the end was predetermined, only being revealed to you now from various points-of-view. That may seem like a subtle difference, but I think it strengthens one of the main tenets of the book: fate, of something that is meant to be for an as-yet-unknown reason. I love all of the connections that can be drawn. Emily is the type of person who usually picks up on these connections, who tends to know everyone's secrets. But in the case of Sam, she misses much of the story. She senses it but cannot manage to extract the details. But the details don't matter. She accepts him in a pure way. It has nothing to do with his appearance, his status, his talents, or even what he says. They simply have a connection. Then you have the Bobby character who, despite all of his access to information and privilege via his P.I. mother and attorney father, is incapable of true understanding. You can hold this character in contrast to just about all of the others. Riddle shows more empathy and insight into the inner workings of things than Bobby even though he is withdrawn and likely autistic (definitely on the margins of society). I found humor in the juxtaposition of Bobby's horrible day full of self-imposed cosmetic damage with Sam & Riddle's daily struggle to survive. Sam and Riddle are both damaged but highly ethical and gifted in their own ways. Their devotion to one another stems from their mutual experience living under the thumb of a mentally ill, abusive father. Even though his actions are extreme, I found the father to be a believable character. Maybe it's because he is basically my grandfather. I'd say that most of the characters evolve from beginning to end. Emily's parents open themselves to Riddle and vice versa. They all seem to travel a wide arc. But the main characters of Emily and Sam do not evolve as much. I think this was purposeful. They were already there. This does read like something that could easily be adapted to film. The music will tie everything together. My only disappointment was with the ending. It felt like a movie that ends and then during the credits, you see flashes of each character with a blurb about what happened to them. It was too abrupt and tidy for my taste. less
