review 1: Problematic? Of course. Surprisingly nuanced and moving? Absolutely. One of the most realistic takes on cheating, self doubt and budding romance I've read in the YA genre. Hated that the protagonists were just super attractive blah blah white athletes. Boooring. Too much attention focused on how hot Chelsea is compared to other female basketball players. Cmonnn. Still- this is an accurate look at each side of the equation and, having been on multiple sides of it, can say I appreciate the balance. The characters are too perfect though and that is insanely frustrating. so this is a three star book but i would definitely read again- more of a 3.5 than anything I guess
review 2: I thought that Playing Hurt by Holly Schindler was very well written. Chelsea was a sta
... morer basketball player who got hurt her senior year when she had a full ride scholarship, one thing about this book was that the narrator did not talk much about the injury. “My tears are like a whole pack of dogs on leashes; no matter how I try to tug them back, they just keep barreling forward.” (35) this really shows her struggles with her injury. She keeps trying to move on from her injury but that's all that makes her, her. Being sent off to a camp helped her overcome the injury, she fell in love with her trainer throughout this process the book completely changed topics. I gave this four stars because it changed topics completely, but I liked how they kept bringing the characters in throughout the whole book. Gabe the ex boyfriend was brought up throughout the whole book and I enjoyed that because you found out what he really meant to her. "History is who we are right now. I mean, just because a chapter of life is over, it isn't gone." (303) this really shows how she changed her life after the injury and learned that there are better things she can do to succeed. less

The cheating annoyed me. Gabe may have been a pain but seriously break up with the guy first.

The beginning is a little slow but once you read a bit, you fall in love!

Cute book, but the overuse of metaphors and similes is a bit distracting.

The cheating thing tho. -_- It should be intolerable.
