review 1: The "Finkler" in question is an inside joke. One you'd find out within the first 10 pages of reading. At first, I was perturbed by the low rating on goodreads for this Novel, and the numerous reviews that claimed this was unreadable.I must admit, it wasn't an easy read, simply due to the narrative style and the language use of the author. I don't mean it in a negative sense. Howard Jacobson has a wonderful command of the English Language. I read it slowly, savouring the words, chuckling at the wit (sometimes rudely snorting when it became impossible to control the mirth) and marvelling at his take on "Jewishness".he takcles a prickly subject (Anti Semitism), woven around a group of friends in a fabulously humorous manner. I couldn't believe that some people didn't find thi... mores funny at all. However, I do believe that it's not everyone's cup of tea. Recommended to readers who loves to explore different cultures ,sub cultures , great writing and humour a-la Wodehouse. It's a bonus if one is current with the happenings around the world too.
review 2: "You could divide the world into those who wanted to kill Jews and those who wanted to be Jews. The bad times were simply those in which the former outnumbered the later"A sometimes hilarious work on the nature of Jewishness from the perspective of three London gents dealing with loss - of love, meaning and identity. At its core it's an examination of pro- and antisemitism. Its gentle mocking of anti-Israeli Jews shows the author's own bias on this issue, but Jacobson is no blind ideologue. The novel twists and turns on the issue, like a conscience grappling directly on the page with rights and wrongs whose values are ephemeral, and rest on a history that is painful, complex and long. There are occasional lulls in the prose, but it offers what few other novels can: It gently prises open the mind with humour, wit and good conversation. less
