review 1: My first proper read of a Lovecraft story. Before I have dipped in but not engaged with the writing and not finished any. Less pulpy than I either remembered or expected but I still found I didnt engage fully or like completely the writing style although there were memorable turns of phrase and the sense of terror/ dread was very effectively managed and built up.Not a huge fan of stories within stories within stories or the found manuscript type of story but they do work to slowly build up dread....Will read more Lovecraft but feel he probably isnt someone I am going to love.
review 2: I have been meaning to assess this classic for sometime, and ended up reading the entire tale (it's only around 30 pages) in an afternoon.Lovecraftian tales often have an air o
... moref Poe about them, and this is no exception. The writer is very much 'one man at a desk' recounting his adventures and travels through the cult of Cthulhu.Although this is an undeniable classic, the language by todays standards can be considered rather complicated. One or two of the plot details only became clear to me after reading a plot summary on Wikipedia. As long as you are willing to put in the 'decoding', this does not detract from the quality of the story in a substantial way.Lovecraft in only 30 pages creates a world that you can almost touch, and whilst not as scary as is often believed, does air on the creepy.Whilst very much of it's time, this is a book that still very much remains a masterpiece of the short story horror genre. less
