Taking her Innocence (Killer of Kings Book 1) – Sam Crescent and Stacey Espino

Blurb

Viper has always been a bastard, a nightmare, death for hire. He’s known for his swift kills, so he isn’t surprised when he’s offered seven figures for a new hit. It’s supposed to be a quick find and eliminate. When his mark turns out to be an innocent twenty-year old with big blue eyes, he shouldn’t care one way or another—but he does. Viper wants to keep her for himself.

Pepper’s step-father killed her mother, and she’s been on the run ever since. When a hitman shows up on her doorstep, covered in ink, and strapped with heat, she expects to be his next victim. But she’s wrong. Viper keeps her safe from the mercenaries hoping to cash in on the world-wide contract on her head. He’s everything she’s not, but she still finds herself falling hard for her captor.

With the odds against them, and death waiting around every corner, can they find true love in each other? Or is Viper only interested in taking her innocence?

This was a short, sweet read.  I grabbed it on a whim and seeing that it was written in part by Sam Crescent, I knew it would be good.  She didn’t let me down!  A contract killer is hired to kill a young girl named Pepper who is an heiress to a large company after the death of her mother.  Her stepfather needs her dead so he can inherit the fortune. Viper, the man being paid to do the job has to deal with other mercenaries who are also after the bounty on Pepper’s head and in doing so, begins to fall for her.

Pepper, although initially terrified of Viper, also begins to develop feelings for him. With most quickie reads, there aren’t a lot of surprises but in this case, I have to admit I was somewhat caught off guard with how Pepper bargains for her life.  I kind of just expected him to say, “screw the money,” and run off into the sunset. Nope. I mean, there was a sunset but there were a few twists along the way.

The smutty scenes were not as smutty as Sam’s other works but they were still good.  I think I enjoyed the buildup to the dirty more than I enjoyed the dirty.  Don’t get me wrong, Sam can write sex like a goddess so you know it was good, but the sexual tension between Viper and Pepper was literally killing me.  They really just needed to scrump. That’s Sarah’s word.  It’s a good word.

Since this is the first book in a new series, hopefully more will be coming out.  One character, Bain, stood out to me and I am really hoping he gets his own book. The backstory of how Viper became who he is was heartbreaking and knowing that Bain went through a similar situation makes me hope he gets a happy ending too. Plus, his name is Bain, and that’s hot.  Yep.  I’m just gonna leave that there.

Pertinents:

Author – Sam Crescent and Stacey Espino

Pages – 144 Pages

Plot 4/5  Even though it was short, I don’t feel like I was cheated a good plot.  Loose ends were nicely tied up and we get our HEA (Happily Ever After).

Smut 3.5/5  I absolutely adored the spark between Viper and Pepper.  They really could have scrumped a few more times and I wouldn’t have been mad.  I can’t say the sexy scenes felt rushed, but there could have been more to them. Or more of them…
