review 1: This is my first entry into the mind of Lovecraft and I have to say I am astonished by his style of writing. Already I can tell that he is a master of terror and horror. The way he uses your own imagination against you to craft your own nightmare is truly masterful.The beasts and images invoked are so frightening because lovecraft births them from your own image of darkness and fear, a reflection of what haunts the lost and depraved recesses of the human soul and imagination.
review 2: The ending twist is visible from space, but that doesn't detract from the story.Lovecraft evokes a dark and mysterious setting, with the character of Pickman painted with particular relish.Whilst it's never going to set you screaming, it's a deeply unsettling tale, although tame ... moreby modern standards, Lovecraft leaves you to imagine your own worst horrors and give yourself sleepless nights. less
