review 1: This is less an encyclopedia of insects than it is an homage to the world of bugs, and all that they face, what little we know about them, how ubiquitous they are, and just how fascinating they can be.. The book also has a strong word of warning about pollution and radiation--these are bad things that show up as defects almost iinstantly in the rapidly turing over generations of bugs--heed their call. Highly readable and recommended!
review 2: Not really the book I thought it presented itself to be. Not so much about insects as it is about the people who have studied them or who work with them in some capacity. ... moreRaffles was quoting by the time he was done explaining who wrote what in what book by someone else - it was exhausting. Sections inside each chapter are not well connected although it seems he went out of his way to connect the chapters themselves - that actually have nothing to do with each other (more or less). I consider myself a closet scientist - I am fascinated with insects, I keep bees and have raised butterflies, etc. but I would not recommend this to anyone but the most astute reader and insect lover who is willing to put up with the convoluted writing. less

Very promising subject. I didn't last two dozen pages.
