review 1: An excellent overview of the amazing work God has done through Dr. John MacArthur. This is the first book I've read authored by Iain Murray, and I now want to read more. He covers many of the most dramatic events in the lives of the MacArthur family and Grace Community Church, but also spends considerable time discussing theology - even areas where he and Dr. MacArthur disagree. This book is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a true minister of God, but without praising the man. Glory is given to God alone.
review 2: John MacArthur is one the people God has used to influence my Christian life and to move me toward pastoral ministry. I started listening to his radio program in the mid 1980's, right about the time when I started to get serious about my own wa
... morelk with God. His devotion and passion for the Word of God has been a model in how I try to go about preparing a sermon. We even named our first son after Dr. MacArthur. All that to say I was thrilled to see the release of this biography of MacArthur's life and ministry (so far). Iain Murray spoke at the first Shepherd's Conference I ever attended (2003??), and I have appreciated his historical reflections (Evangelicalism Divided) and biographies (Lloyd-Jones).This book on John MacArthur did not disappoint. Having been an observer and unofficial student of his ministry for over 20 years, I sometimes feel I could have written a "from-a-distance" biography myself. But Murray has done an outstanding service. less
