review 1: Parts I and II of this were good, and I enjoyed them. (The first-person narrator of Part II is a very thinly disguised Donald Richie, by the way, in case that might interest you.) But part III was silly almost beyond belief, and I'm still wondering what could have possibly been the meaning of it, other than maybe to account (very sketchily) for what Ri Koran/Shirley/Yoshiko was doing in those years? I don't know. But if you're going to read this, believe me, you'll do yourself a favor if you stop after part II. The author would have done himself a favor if he'd stopped there, too, IMHO.
review 2: the first part was the most interesting which was sad. it had someone who believed in something - kind've. second part is about some small town useless guy who's int
... moreo little boys and is happy when he's watching a movie and hunting down hairless men. third part was... what? glorifying terrorism? i thought the book was going to be about ri koran. instead it was about three men who couldn't find direction and so got carried wherever fate took them. ri koran seemed to be a flimsy little girl in a grown up body. the only time i liked her was when she was standing up to her first husband. i did finish it because i don't think you get to give a book the "hated" rating unless you got to the last sentence. the writing seemed to try at the beginning but it just kept giving up and wimping out. overall: lame and disgusting. it made the japanese seem to be self-important whiny brats. who knows. i've only met one japanese person and he was awesome. less
