review 2: BOOK: A Book of Sleep by NaCLASS: Toddler Storybook Art ClassLI
... moreNKS:BOOK SHARING:I read Na’s A Book of Sleep to the children after showing them a few related signs (day, night, moon, stars). WE then briefly discussed the elements of the illustrations-dark sky, moon, stars, animals sleeping, etc.) I then explained that we would be doing a “magic” nighttime painting by first drawing on a sheet of heavy paper with white or very light crayons and then we would be painting over the drawings with watercolors to reveal the drawing magically and showed a few examples. I quickly explained to parents that I wanted them to also participate this time by making a drawing of their own with the white crayons so that their child could paint over it and discover the hidden picture that adults had made in addition to the children painting over their own drawings. Art Activity:I passed out heavy white paper (small sheets or either watercolor paper or any heavier paper work best) to each child and adult. I then provided white crayons to the adults and older children. I had some light yellow and pink crayons available to any young children who seems to struggle with the idea of drawing and having nothing show up on the paper. But most children are fine with even scribbling randomly with the white crayons and this does work best for the final product. I also introduced some simple stencils of animal shapes after a few minutes for those who seemed to need a little guidance in their drawings. After everyone had a little time to draw I began to introduce medium sized brushes and a “nighttime” color of watercolor in a tray-I used purple but it could be blue or brown or even black or a combination of colors even. I directed the children to paint over their drawings with the watercolors to reveal the hidden pictures. I then asked parents to give children the drawing they had done to let them see what the hidden image was from the parent. OBSERVATIONS:This was a low mess, easy to do two part project that I think both caregivers and children enjoyed doing together. Depending on the age the children will be interested in either the reveal at the end or the process itself of using crayons and paint in the same project. This works well for all ages and could be modified to be longer and to do more with it. Some children finished fairly quickly and I sang songs with them and other children did 3 or 4 of these drawings and were still working when I started clean up. less

If it captures the attention of my 1 yr old son long enough to finish, it's a keeper!
