review 1: This book was incredible. I'm biased - I love France, even though I can say about 3 words properly in French. If you have been to France, if you want to go to France, if you like history, this book is for you. Caro guides the readers through several centuries of French history by taking them on day trips in and around Paris to ancient cathedrals, fortresses, palaces, and other historically significant sites. Caro does an excellent job balancing specific detail and historical information, without overwhelming the reader. She is a terrific writer and does an excellent job using her writing to bring you to the sites. I have been fortunate enough to travel to some of the places that Caro discusses in her book, and if I get the chance to go back to France, I will definitely re-... moreread this book to get a richer experience. This is a great summer read that is a great way to transport you to France. If only it came with fresh croissants and coffee!
review 2: It was fine. The content was very inconsistent from chapter to chapter: sometimes it was all history, sometimes it was gossip, sometimes it was her personal experience traveling, sometimes it was a detailed account of the objects at the location. If you're looking for places to travel by train from Paris, this is a solid book. If you're looking for anything more specific or comprehensive, it is hit and miss. less
