review 1: To anyone familiar with French history and many of the sites featured in that extensive history, this book reads like a biography. The reader can literally envision the detailed features that Caro so richly develops. Her research to provide information on the planning and development of each of these historical sites allows the reader to savor them like sitting down to a wonderful 5 course French dinner. For travelers to France this book could serve as a guide book to understanding and appreciating each site going well beyond the general guide books on the market.
review 2: An engaging and well-balanced combination of travelogue, guide book, popular history and personal narrative. The reader walks with Caro through a couple of dozen rail-based day trips, al
... morel based in Paris, whose destinations recapitulate the last 800 years of French history. Vignettes and anecdotes from history come alive as Caro looks at monuments in modern France and sees people and events from the past. She has strong likes and dislikes – whether it be art, architecture, historic personages, weather or food – and the dislikes, no matter how illustrious, get short shrift. This didn't bother me unduly. After all, it is her book and she is charmingly unrepentant about her prejudices. I don't share them all, but, like Caro, I have little interest in exploring cruelty, torture, sexism, anti-Semitism and standing in line. Her travel budget – especially for food – is way beyond anything I'll ever be able to afford. That didn't keep me from enjoying every Michelin star along with her and her beloved Bob. Francophiles and readers who love history will find sure pleasure in this book less
