Hazel Micallef Mystery
review 1: I was hesitant to read this based on the reviews, but it came in as a solid, well-crafted read for me. The plot was good and the characters fleshed out so that they had warts but were likeable. A little too much of the "girl-hero-detective' in Hazel. That character has been in fashion since Sue Grafton started the "alphabet" series, and is becoming quite unpalatable to me, especially Dana Stabanow's main character.Hazel just had back surgery, but she's out and about doing stunts and acrobatics, and battling the black-hats on her own. Whatever happened to: don't go in without backup? And if your team is so good and all are on stand-by and within radio call, why not give a shout for help? They are your team! All of the rest of the book is a good start to what could become a g... moreood series. PS the author is not Swedish.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd book in this series by Canadian author, Inger Ash Wolfe. It had me wondering what was going on for the first half and then it ripped through to a surprising finish. I like the recurring characters and am interested to know where Hazel's professional & personal life are heading in the next instalment.Definitely not a cozy mystery but not as hardcore as say, Mo Hayder. less

Realized had read this before. Ties in Toronto to some of us who actually have lived there.
