review 1: A very interesting story! I did not know that in 1636 the King banned lace. It was made by young women in abbeys until they were blind and no longer useful (about 24 yrs old), then thrown on the streets. The lace was smuggled by dogs and other interesting ways, throughout Europe. The characters are "laced" through the story until they come together....I had no idea...not the best writing, but a very interesting history.
review 2: This is story is about 16th century France and the topic of lace smuggling. The characters are slowly introduced in different chapters and their connections to other characters isn't clear at the beginning. As the story progresses the story and characters slowly piece together. This is novel takes the reader through several characte... morers and the implications of their decisions that they make to because of a contraband item, lace. This is a quick read - not my favorite book but recommended for those that enjoy period pieces. less
