review 1: This book was chosen for our book club and from the moment I read about the author's life, I was intrigued.Irène Némirovsky was of Russian-Jewish origin and one of the many victims of the Final Solution. She was killed at 39 in Auschwitz, the largest concentration camp in the Nazi occupied Poland. Her wealthy family fled the Russian Empire at the beginning of the Russian Revolution in 1917 when Irène was only 14. Since then she lived mostly in Paris, married there, had two daughters and wrote intensely. Her novel, The Dogs and the Wolves, echoes Némirovsky's life and depicts her vision of the essential spirit, soul and eternal condition of the Jewish race. A fascinating novel which is dark and focuses on immigrant Jews and their displacement in society. Although not con... moresidered her best work, I enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading more.
review 2: It seems to me, a non-Jew, that this book is about what it is to be Jewish. It begins with Ada and Ben caught up in a pogrom and ends under the shadow of the Final Solution. The tension throughout is between rich Jews and poor Jews. The rich Sinners living in luxury have evolved from the poor ones like Ben just as dogs evolved from wolves, but the threat of persecution is always close.Ada seems to stand aside from her heritage, freed by her art and her fantasies, but she is deported, cast adrift in an embattled Europe. It ends with the birth of her son and she finally has a sense of belonging. I found this ending unsatisfying and a bit trite. An interesting book and well-written but the characters seemed like those in a fantasy by the Brothers Grimm and I didn't really connect with them. less
