review 1: I read this book because it was free for kindle. I'd never heard of the author and really didn't know much about the book. I realize half way through that it was categorized as "christian fiction" and that was kind of a turn off as I'm not religious. However, there wasn't TOO much preaching in the book. It seemed to be part of the characters and story line as opposed to obnoxious soap box preaching. That being said, I'm glad I kept reading because I enjoyed the book. I disagree with the other reviewers that say the main character was unlikable. I felt like he was likable and relatable.
review 2: Interesting sort of literary police procedural/mystery. Strong characters, building tension and a number of twists and turns. I think one thing that I had a hard time ... moregetting comfortable with is how Bertrand kind of dumps you into the middle of Roland March's life post some unknown trauma or personal tragedy and only slowly over time reveals this backstory. At times it had the feeling of starting as series with the second book. I had a hard time getting a handle on the main character. Maybe this was intentional on the author's part but it didn't quite work for me for the first third.Once I got fully into the story, however, things flowed nicely. Bertrand does a nice job of balancing a number of story lines and slowly bringing them together. There are some powerful emotions and issue wrestled with and Bertrand does a nice job of exploring them without wallowing in pain or gore for its own sake. The loss of a child, the events of September 11, trying to rescue a career seemingly going nowhere, the impact of these type of events on marriage and relationships, the book touches on these as part of life; as a reality for so many.Interestingly, I didn't find anything about the book that was particularly Christian, except perhaps that Christians are not presented as freaks or oddballs, despite being published by a Christian publisher.I had this book on my Kindle for years and just now got around to reading it. I found the first book interesting enough that I think I will check out he net two. less
