review 1: This book introduces the 4leaf program. It isn´t vegan or vegetarian but is most similar to a vegan diet. the program promotes that 80% of the calories we eat should come from whole foods (animals, plants, etc.). If we do this we will be healthier, it gets rid of many kinds of cancer, and is cheaper. People say that they can focus better, it gets rid of headaches, etc. This book talks about a program that can change the world. The book talks about the harmful qualities of the meat we eat as well as dairy and the poor quality of living of the animals we eat. It also talks about concerns for the world as more and more countries are adopting a western diet and becoming sicker and sicker. I really enjoyed this book and believe a lot of what was said. It has already helped me r... moreealize the importance of eating more fruits and vegetables. It´s a great way of eating and is very well researched.
review 2: This book advocates a plant-based diet for better health, combating obesity and, as a result, lowering the cost of rising health care. In addition, such a move would benefit the planet by being less invasive on our environment. Simple? Not!. We are a nation or world of carnivores. He does not appear adverse to supplementation of Vitamin B12 or the use of products fortified with calcium. My friend Ruth Heidrich (“The Race For Life”) does it without fortification and supplements. Key to the individual programs is the “Four Leaf Program” where one counts the percent of calories consumed from “whole plant sources.” While whole plant sources do not include such items as tofu because of their processing it is not clear if grains are excluded. Virtually all grains go through some form of processing whether it be steel cutting or rolling. I think clarification would have been desirable, since the grains provide so much of our essential calories. His insertion of the inhumanity of slaughtering animals for consumption seemed out of place for me. It would perhaps be best placed in another work. Instead, I would have liked to have seen the section on the four leaf program expanded, for it is what we all can do.While the book was entertaining, and the author proposes solutions, I felt that short of outright tyranny, it is practically not doable. At least, we must evolve after more than a millennia of eating the way we do. Still I agree with most of what is written. I would like to have seen some other notable references included, despite of the good documentation. less
