review 1: I almost gave this book five stars because Higgins blends in enough sex to make it interesting along with the storyline. If you love English spook thrillers, you'll love this one!The Alexander Kurbsky Affair. Alex Kurbsky, a retired Russian soldier hero and novelist is giving a speech in NY attended by Monica Starling, Sean Dillon's main squeeze. Kurbsky, still under the guise of the Russians, kills a Putin critic right before the speech and impresses Monica greatly. Continuing Moscow's plan, Kurbsky is slated for commemoration by the French in Paris, after which he is snatched by Monica, Salter and Dillon. Kurbsky is pushed by the assurance from Putin that he will be reunited with his radical sister upon fulfillment of his mission. Upon fleeing to London, Alex is reunited... more with his aunt who raised him Svetlana and temporarily feels the zeal of his youth years in London. He maintains contact with the Russians via his long trusted sergeant Bounine, who has been promoted to COL Luzhkov's deputy and arranges for Alex to be a mole in GEN Ferguson's team. Learning of a plot to snatch Blake Johnson, Alex thwarts the op and delivers Johnson safely. In the meantime, he takes revenge on a sardonic past enemy Shaid Besayev and his bodyguard by killing them in the cemetary Besayev vists to mourn his dead wife. In preparation for a four way summit to ease mideast tensions, Alex learns that Kuzhkov has contracted to have the summit barge blown to bits in the Thames. The crazed and dying contractor loads his boat with Semtex and boards Alex and Bounine to accompany him to their deaths. Alex thwarts the plan and kills the plotter Selim, as he and Bounine narrowly escape death and end up in a secure hospital clinging to life.
review 2: Once again Higgins uses characters Sean Dillon and gang, but introduces us to Alexander Kurbsky, a noted and award winning Russian author. But he is no longer interested in living in Russia and wants a way out. Dillon and gang discover this and come up with a plan to accomplish his "escape." The only problem is that this is all a ruse. Kurbusky is actually working for the Russians and intent on destroying Dillon and gang. The book moves along at a pretty good rate. There are a few unexpected plot twists. But the ending left me unfulfilled and leaves it apparent that a character will join Dillon and gang. There is the typical killing and such that Higgins is known for in his books, but it seemed like this book is not half as bad as those in the past. less
