review 1: I had never actually read the original fairy tales that weren't disney based and didn't have happy endings. When I did I was like "now I understand where they all come from." Because growing up I always thought disney made these. These are pretty grim (pun intended). The way the little mermaid ends up, the step sisters in cinderella cutting off their feet off. But I definitely enjoy it now because I know where they come from.
review 2: Fabulous in pieces. I spent 5 months reading these stories a bit a a time, some to my kids, some just to myself. I think trying to read this start to finish would be tedious. I truly enjoyed most of the stories, weird, violent, cruel, moralistic and sappy. I half knew these were the basis for many Disney stories but didn't quit... moree realize how many, sometimes the originals were better, sometimes, honestly the Disney adaptations were better. I read a few in the original German but since I don't speak German all that well that was a challenge. I would recommend everyone (ok maybe not everyone) get a copy of this book to pick up and read for short periods. less
