review 1: I received an email from this author, never having heard of him, asking me if I would like a free copy of this book wanting me to review it for him on sites like this one. I was more than happy to oblige. I told him that I would give an honest review, and here it is. I totally loved this book. It was different, and, IMHO, in a really good way. This is a novel within a novel, and it can be difficult to determine what is real and what is the imaginings of the lead character, who is also the author of the embedded novel. The story is told in alternating chapters, and really becomes a look at a single day in New York City from the perspective of Larry, an self-proclaimed unattractive, vocationally unmotivated Jewish man and Starshine, a totally beautiful and compassionat... moree (if mixed-up) young woman. The woman of his dreams, the woman he could never hope to have--or could he? He writes a novel with her as the main character, wanting to propose his total love for her on the day that it is approved for publishing. There are a series of events throughout the day that, at times, border on the absurd. However, the novel is exquisitely constructed with characters weaving in and out of the two parallel threads, and there is a lot of heart and intelligence in the writing. I especially loved the descriptions of New York City, which were an integral part of the tale.
review 2: Okay, I so wanted to love this book, I truly did. Not only because of the cover, or because of the map inside, but it did seem like a fun idea. When I researched it, I found out that it is was categorized as "a re-imagining of James Joyce's Ulysses and is set in New York City." I love Ulysses so I thought I could read it, I could not. It seemed to complicated for the type of story it was, over-analyzing, and barely any dialogue for me. I will give it another shot, hopefully. So I will wait for a better review then if it ever does happen. less
