The Books of Elsewhere
review 1: Just some observations...Olive, although she doesn't realise it (nor does the reader), is a typical only child - expecting her own way, never listening to the word "no", ni understanding of patience and prone to petulance and self-pity. That said, she is a good person. She does not act out of malice but a misguided sense of good. She doesn't want to hurt anyone but can get muddled in the details, often muddied by all her issues from being the daughter of brilliant and very structured parents. This next instalment of The Books of Elsewhere still maintains the series earlier excitement. Annabelle McMartin is still a threat. The old stone house is rife with unfriendly magic. It is still in the thrall of the McMartins family. We learn the it can manipulate poor Olive quite ea... moresilty. She needs help to stop the McMartins and their need to take control. In thus book, we see Olive becoming more mature. She is trying to come into her own though at times it seems like an unlikely task. She is still the keeper of the old magical spectacles and she still useds them to travel all through Elsewhere - a magical worls that exists in all the paintings created by Aldous McMartin. This time Annabel McMartin is back and she is trying once again to bring back her grandfather and gain control of the house that Olive lives in, The story was well written and exciting, We still care about the characters, more importantly we want to know what the next phase will be, how will the story end. A great book for kids from 8 - 11 and adults who still love that kind of world.
review 2: I read the first 60%, then put the book down for about 6 months. It's a danger when reading kids books (as opposed to YA) that what is hidden from young readers is sometimes painfully obvious to adults. In this case the fact that Horatio was not himself. Also Olive's reaction to the idea of Rutherford leaving, it all just made me less fond of Olive and I had a hard time continuing. Still a good book and part of a good series, though. less
