review 1: Jade Varden is a masterful storyteller. I was given a review copy and wasn't sure what to expect. This isn't a genre I usually read but from page one I was hooked. The central character lives on the page and you can't help but care about her and others swept up in her story. The plot is wildly unlikely and with super rich bad guys it might have become a caricature but I gladly discarded my disbelief and jumped on the roller coaster with Rain. This author could easily offer everyone a free copy because, like me, they'll have to buy the other 3 in the series to find out what happens next.
review 2: This was a freebie on Amazon and not my usual genre. I think it's YA but turned into a murder mystery. The first few chapters before the shoplifting are boring as hell
... more and I almost gave up as it's full of teeny prep school dynamics with rich kids vs poor kids, etc. As a writer and reader, I would've put the shoplifting chapter first and then bored everyone for a bit. Stick with it, though, Jade Varden is a good writer and captures the petty teen scene quite well. She does toss in a few twists and turns. By the end of the book she's turned it all around into a murder mystery. Part 2 is .99 cents. I'm tempted... less
