Anyone who knows me knows that the one thing I love just as much as musicals are books. One thing that I love to do is try to get more people excited about reading, and I also love seeing people get excited about musicals, so here’s a list of recommended books paired with musicals to try watching or listening to. This list also works vice versa!
If you like Dear Evan Hansen
Try All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
If you like profound and often heartbreaking stories about teens dealing with mental illness, which you probably do if you like Dear Evan Hansen, then All the Bright Places is the perfect book for you. Both of these stories are quite sad, but also uplifting. They are a testament to the fact that we all need to seek to understand each other, because you never know who is suffering. Just keep in mind that they both involve suicide.
If you like The Phantom of the Opera
Try Caraval by Stephanie Garber
What I love about Caraval is that the writing is so rich and atmospheric when it comes to describing setting. It’s a feast for the eyes of the imagination, just as Phantom is an actual feast for the eyes. If you’ve seen the show, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Everything on the stage is dazzling, from the candles to that beautiful chandelier. Caraval has that same kind of magic, and it’s mystical and filled with intrigue, just like this musical.
If you like She Loves Me
Try To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
Yes, I know it’s another young adult novel. Bear with me, though. She Loves Me is a sweet, romantic musical comedy and this book is just as adorable. It’s got that main character hate-to-love trope that most romance fans adore. It’s also very lighthearted and will make you smile, even if you find it cheesy.
Those are all the books I have to recommend. Tell me about some books you love in the comments!
