review 1: Jake Arnott's "House of Rumour" is a melange of historical characters and incidents. The central character, Larry Zagorski, is a sci-fi writer who has rubbed shoulders with the early sci-fi greats: Heinlein, Dick, etc. Throw in Aleister Crowley, Ron Hubbard, and Herman Hess, and you've got an intense novel where fact and fiction blend and become harder and harder to separate. Intriguing, but not easy to read.
review 2: The time i have spent reading this book I will never get back. I cant tell you the type of book it is because i dont think it falls into any genre. Its a spy book, historical, science fiction and fact. However, the way it is written it doesn't run smoothly from one chapter to the next. If the author had stuck to the spy part which included Ian
... more Fleming, and the story about Hess coming to scotland, it could have made quite an interesting tale. But it is interspersed with ramblings about space ships, grey aliens, child abuse and homosexuality. The author is obviously discussing his opinions on events that have happened since 1941, which is fine, if you care what the author thinks, which I dont. I kept reading because I always try finish a book I have started, and it said the things that have happened will have a bearing on our future. Well, duh, of course they do. But I was intrigued to what it would be. At the end there is no answer, again, its just the musings of the author. I have to confess when i finally finished this drivel I did something I have never done before, I flung the book to the floor in disgust. Reading this book was like being at a party full of pseudo-intellectuals who think everyone wants to hear what they say because they are so important. Unfortunately, as I wasn't at a party I couldn't quietly get drunk and let it wash over me. I dont know if this was a fictional story or a text by the author, and I dont care. I would only recommend this book to someone I didn't like, and laugh as they too, will inevitably throw it to the floor in frustration. I await the barrage of disgust from the aforementioned party people, who will say I'm obviously a luddite and intellectually subnormal for not understanding this "significant and marvelous" book. My answer to them will be, this review is my opinion, and thats all that matters to me. After all, isn't that exactly what the author has done? less

A strange cornucopia of tales. Some interesting conspiracy theories woven amongst a few factoids.
Andreacoronadob
Over-ambitious and therefore unsatisfying, but some good plots and prose

Couldn't do it. I tried reading it, but gave up on it.
eloisalanuza
