review 1: This is more of the day-to-day lives of one ordinary Londoner and his extraordinary cat...and if you're a fan of reading about cute cats doing cute cat things, there's much to enjoy here. There's no denying that Bob the cat is the book's main selling-point, but I found myself also really rooting for his human companion: I think Bob's antics are literally half the story. After the events of the first book, it's really satisfying - and inspiring - to see James move forward in his life, despite one or two shocking moments along with the usual setbacks and minor injustices. My criticisms of the writing in James' and Bob's first outing still apply, but the bottom line is that this is still a good story, and most importantly it effectively highlights social issues that wouldn't ... morehave been given much attention otherwise. It sounds a bit trite, but James and Bob give the homeless and similarly vulnerable people a voice. Sure, their anecdotes raise a smile and give you a warm fuzzy feeling afterwards, but their story has some serious points to make. Fortunately they're presented in a way that's accessible and entertaining.
review 2: I sound like a broken record when I say "I love this cat", but it's true. I like the writing style of Bowen in this book. My favourite parts were the bobmobile (bicycle). And when Bob had a dog companion for a day, and how well he treated it. I think the tipping point is when James got off the drugs, and when he had a fight with another Big Issue seller (subsequently losing his spot). Instead of doing nothing, James started to mature. The rest is now history. less
