review 1: I bought this book for my son, who was enamored of Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat. This story of a "busker" who befriends a stray tabby cat is perfect for this audience. It's a cleaned-up, simplified version of A Street Cat Named Bob. There are some tough issues to be dealt with -- drug and alcohol abuse, homelessness -- and they're handled sensitively in this book without being ignored. You can enjoy the feline story, yet use the book as a jumping-off point for discussions of life's realities. The color photos of this handsome cat are lovely! For those who have been to London and strolled the area around Covent Garden, where Bob's owner was a street musician, it's a pleasure to visit again.
review 2: I came across this part in the book that really touched m
... moree: "Seeing me with my cat softened me in people's eyes. It humanised me. Especially after I'd been so dehumanised. In some ways it was giving me back my identity. I had been a non-person. Now at last I was becoming a person again." This again reminds us that do not judge people based on their look or what they're doing, they might have other side of the stories that we do not know.I'm also amazed by the change James decided to take for Bob from being an illegal busker to a legitimate Big Issue vendor. This pair became inseparable after all the comics, danger, adventures happened to them.A really touching and inspiring story to read and I spent half day to finish it! It didn't happen to me for almost 20 years! less
