review 1: This was my first attempt at reading a book by this author. Though it certainly looked like something I would enjoy from the plot description, I was not able to get into this AT ALL, and I did try. It is not often that I stop reading a book without finishing it, but that is precisely what I did with this title. I really wanted to like this, but neither the author's style of writing nor the characters themselves grabbed me at all, and I found myself bored very quickly.
review 2: A much better story and writing effort from James Tabor in his Hallie Leland series. In this the second book, Hallie is urgently called to the South Pole to replace another scientist who died from a drug overdose. Upon her arrival, Hallie discovers a video blog made by the dead scie
... morentist and watches as she is murdered and tortured by a man whose face she cannot see in the video images. Thus begins Hallie's journey to discover how the scientist died and to complete the mission of retrieving a sample of a previously undiscovered organism that could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While Tabor tries to set a creepy mode, his description falls a bit short. Let's just say the mood is restrained. As Hallie digs deeper and more deaths pile up, she suspects that an even greater evil plot is hiding beneath the chaotic atmosphere of the South Pole station. As she tries to decide who she can trust and works to uncover the truth, Hallie becomes the target of an unknown group determined to hide their evil secret. There are some behind the scenes work being done by returning characters from the first book, but there efforts are focused in Washington, D.C. and are maddeningly too small to matter. While Hallie is a strong female character, the personality that the author gives her can be very grating at times. Not so bad so that you lose interest, but bad enough that your not actually rooting for her either. While the dust jacket suggests fans of James Rollins and Brad Thor will enjoy this read, I think they would find this book lacking. I'd recommend it for people looking for some light suspenseful and mystery reading, but if you want realistic action and depth of characters beyond the protagonist, your time would be better spent elsewhere. less

It was an enjoyable read. A little on the predictable side but still entertaining.
