How To End Human Suffering
review 1: My feelings about this book are complicated. I think Art is a good thing, but it was not what I had expected when I picked up the book. The disjoint between my expectations and the actual text really reduced my enjoyment. So, why did I have an incorrect set of expectations? The title...the cover.... the text on the back of the book. I expected something cheesy and YA-oriented. Instead, I got a modern re-skinning of platonic ideals. And, admittedly, there was text that just left me feeling uncomfortable. Sometimes that's what I look for in a book - stretching yourself and your brain periodically is good for you. But, as I expected candy, and got candy-coated vegetables instead, I wasn't quite sure what to do.
review 2: Whoa! Hilarious and way messed up. You know
... more when you are reading a book and you keep stopping to annoy the people around you by reading out particularly awesome bits? I did this ALL THE TIME. My daughter ended up hearing a large chunk of NVPFZ in spite of being far too young for it to really be considered appropriate reading. Even so, she loved (the heavily censored) version as much as I did. I've certainly never read anything like it. I'm halfway through the sequel now and I think, so far, it might be even better. less
