review 1: The Good Lord Bird is an entertaining romp about slavery, John Brown and the Harper's Ferry raid, of all things. I laughed out loud several times. The Django Unchained of books, it's set to become a motion picture. The book simultaneously takes it's subject matter seriously while poking fun at Brown's near insanity of thought and deed, and derives humor from John Brown's mis-identification of the narrator - a young boy "freed" by John Brown - as a girl. Liberty is taken with history and Frederick Douglass is portrayed as a coward. Not be used as a history textbook.
review 2: McBride uses powerful prose and the perspective of a young man to tell the story of abolitionist John Brown. The story spans about three years from Brown's days fighting in Kansas to
... moreHarpers Ferry. McBride manages to line the pages with humor and tragedy simultaneously. I found myself laughing out loud one moment and sorrowful the next. In the end, I think I learned a good lesson. Thanks to McBride for sharing such a wonderful story. less
