review 1: There are good things about the book that show promise regarding the premise and the plot line and you can see a vast amount of material to produce a long running series BUT the dialogue and some of the scenarios where the character is inside his own head aren't good at all; don't get me wrong want to read the next book in the series but i would have this writer tell his editor to earn his keep because the dialogue is cheezy and overly done, he needs to learn that less is more; good example is when he is crying with the girl he just met at the helletogue club, I wanted to barf because it was so lame but it didn't need to be, if he would have put in less dialogue, some better description and a bit of angst that would have been enough but he way over did it; I am going to r... moreead the next book very soon so I will give an update on Book 2 and I hope it's better written so he can continue to expand his Chalk universe
review 2: I can't do it. I tried, but honestly, this is one of the worst things I have ever read. Deacon is obviously a Gary Stu, with no flaws whatsoever, everyone loves him, and he's got special powers (but he hunts and hates all so-called monsters). What really bugs me is the references to all kinds of other hunters, thereby insinuating that they are all in the same universe, but the rules are different. No deadman's blood like in Supernatural, all the vampires are evil (unlike in Anita Blake), and while there is a reference to vampires with souls (a la Buffy and Angel) Deacon doesn't put much stock in that. He is a very unlikable character, for all that all the other characters absolutely adore him. less

Good start to the series. Pretty straight-ahead storyline with no real twists. We're-spiders!
