review 1: It was great to see Delano get one final stab at Hellblazer before DC closed up the franchise -- and unlike Bad Blood, this book really matches the work that Delano did in his early run. It's a pretty cool expansion of the early, authority-hating Constantine (along with some of the baggage from those early issues) into his later years, mixed up with modern politics of the Middle East (and thus a pretty far cry from the anti-Thatcher tirades of Delano's first run).Overall, a beautiful, emotional, and thoughtful story.
review 2: I haven't read any Hellblazer for a while, and this stand-alone graphic novel was a good way to get back into the groove. DeLano is clearly happy to be writing the Constantine character again, and Jock's artwork is damn near perfect. He g
... moreets Constantine's posture and everything down exactly right, and the art is stylized without being cartoony; he chooses the right times to distort figures, and the right times to make them look entirely too human. The story itself, which focuses on the war on terror and the occupation of Iraq, is heavy-handed at times, but overall I felt it worked. This book will probably be more enjoyable for people who are already familiar with John Constantine's foibles, but it stands alone just fine, and you definitely don't have to have an excyclopedic understanding of the backstory. less
