review 1: I read as many Hellblazer collections as I could get my hands on from the library years ago, and after years of them persisting to rattle around in my head, I'm finally attempting to collect the whole series.A few things about the first volume of John Constantine, Hellblazer: 1. You may feel as though it can't possibly be the first issues, as it dives in with various references to past events in his life. Don't worry about that. John's dead associates, Newcastle, and other connections and life events will be fleshed out further into the series. 2. Trigger warnings for rape, racist language, and other brutal atrocities linked to war in the issue titled "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." You can totally skip this story without missing much. Some of the other issues d... moreepict white supremacists stalking and assaulting people, but the Vietnam soldiers coming back in Iowa bothered me much more. 3. It gets better. The new NBC series Constantine premieres this month, and it will be interesting to see how they write such a despicable antihero as Constantine. Also, how will they pronounce his name, will he be chainsmoking, and how spot-on will his accent be?
review 2: This was really good. I started it a few months ago and have been picking at it off and on since and just finished this first volume. Towards the end, even though it was still really good, things got a little confusing, in the sense that I feel often when I'm reading comics, in that there's a lot about the particular narrative that I don't know because I haven't read other issues or volumes that I probably should have, but still, this was really good and I'm glad I read it.At this book's best, a lot of the writing was of a very, very high quality. I really, really like the different storylines in this first volume of Hellblazer. Because I don't really know anything about Constantine or the different characters it really let's you get into the stories and the narratives. There's really no sense that you know what's about to happen or not happen since I don't know anything about the series as a whole or where it came from or where it's gone after the book I'm reading twenty or thirty years after the fact. The different religious imagery was often very beautiful and thought provoking. It's interesting how both Heaven and Hell are more or less made to be the bad folks, and the way the writers take a kind of post-modern approach to traditional Good vs. Evil Religion is pretty cool and overall interesting. The social issues, too, are handled very, very well, I think. I found those parts very, very moving. And man, I'm such a sucker for Abby Arcane, even though I got somewhat confused and a little lost during the last couple issues, getting to read that storyline was really, really wonderful and touching. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more volumes of Hellblazer and eventually I plan on reading the whole Alan Moore Swamp Thing run, too. That's something I want to do while I'm taking such a long extended vacation from writing: Besides getting lots of things that have been piling up read, I really want to get ahold some several volumes of Swamp Thing and different things like that.I really want to start reading Justice League Dark in the New 52 and the New 52 Constantine, too, as well as several other different classic and Indie comics, graphic narratives, I find to be really, really worthwhile and interesting, and to kind of fuel that I really want to read as many classic issues as I can so I can have the best grasp possible as I read more and more comics and shit like that.So anyway, I'm kind of disjointed right now, I've been putting off eating dinner and going for a long walk for a long time and I'm kind of strung out after drinking a huge pot of coffee while I was finishing this book for the last couple hours...So yeah, either way, this was really solid, definitely one of the better things in general I've read lately. It definitely was moving and made me want to keep reading at every point I stopped. And by far one of the best comic collections I've read since I've started reading comics again. Definitely glad I finally finished and read this!Further thoughts:The whole time I was reading this book I wanted to remember to remark on how beautifully the different shades of purple were used in this book. And I forgot. So I just wanted to say, the way the artists used all those different shades of purple, and in a sense, yellows, too, in this book was really, really beautiful and breathtaking. less
