review 1: I have to confess I was kind of shocked by how it ended because it just ... ended. Boom. I kept thinking there was going to be some kind of a wrap up. I just didn't feel all that connected and there seemed to be jumps where you were told "oh, he's sleeping in the barn" but even though you got both POV there was never any angst over sleeping in the house with the guy and not being able to bear it. I just didn't love them. Maybe it needed to be longer to make me care more.
review 2: I usually like Jan Irving's books but this was a frustrating little story. The way Cody and Adrian meet really set the tone for the whole story and had me struggling to suspend my disbelief. Right from the beginning the story had me going "Oh, come on." 1.) Adrian finds Cody lying nak
... moreed and looking beat down in the middle of a dark, deserted road. Okay, naked man in the road. Not so bad. 2.) Adrian gets out of his car to help Cody. Adrian's a vet so I told myself that his instinct is to help. Helping the possibly drunk, naked man in the road. I'm making the "Seriously?" face but it's still not so bad. 3.) This is where I gave an inch and the story took a mile. This is where the WTF-ery starts. The dirty, naked man on the road turns out to be sober. Adrian proceeds to politely introduce himself and discuss the deeper reason why he's moved to the country. You're on a dark, deserted dirt road in the middle of nowhere with a dirty, naked and scratched up man who's made no effort to tell you how he ended up lying in the middle of the road. How does Adrian not see a problem with that? 4.) In addition to introducing himself, Adrian tells Cody that he's new to the area and moves around alot so he really has no roots but wants to put some down in his new place in the country. Let's just translate that to "Hey, Possible Psychotic Serial Killer Man, I'm not really close with anyone and there's a good chance no one will be waiting to hear from me for a few days. What now?" Adrian's supposed to be from the city. It's mentioned in passing a couple of times in the story. I'd think he would be a little more cautious. A common way that killers lure their victims? Pretend to be hurt and in need of help. It gets a little more outrageous from there. The story also feels strangely disjointed. Adrian continues to be unbelievably naive and Cody continues to be suspiciously secretive. I think Adrian calls it mysterious. I call it suspicious. Oh. Despite Adrian knowing not a thing about Cody and Cody's increasingly suspect behavior, Adrian has lots of hot sex with Cody. Yes, the sex is hot and sexy. That's pretty standard for a Jan Irving book. What did I like? Cody being a shifter who was ashamed of what he was and pretty much thinking he's a monster. That was a new one for me. Other than the shifter thing...yeah. No. less
