review 1: Not my typical cup of tea, but a good choice for traditional book clubs: romance, a bit of a mystery, and lush/sensual descriptions of a foreign setting. Reminded me of The Notebook (which will probably tell you a lot about if you want to read it or not), but with added interest of learning about a different culture and overall way of looking at life and love. It has also been described as an adult fairy tale; it definitely relies on the reader being a romantic and open to some magical elements. The description of a bright and beautiful adolescent love affair is particularly well-done, and the strength of the novel.

... moreght the ending left a lot of questions hanging and was just a bit "over the top" in sentimentality but now I see he has written a sequel so perhaps part of that was deliberate. I've many times had the discussion of which would be worse to lose, your eye sight or your hearing---I've always thought eyesight for years. But as I watch the effects of hearing loss in my husband (yes he has fabulous hearing aides) I wonder. This book made me rethink the question again---if you have hearing you can socialize with others---you don't have to see them to be a part of their lives. I remember a true story about a man who could have regained his eyesight and chose not to---makes me wonder how much he could "hear" that others around him could not. And wouldn't a lot of prejudices disappear if people could not label others by the way they appear? less
