review 1: “This book is a mystery, a drama, and a classic sentimental love story all wrapped into one. If you’re looking for that next book that will leave an impression, that you will never forget and you will always think of fondly, this is the next book for you. Spanning generations, ‘The Art of Hearing Heartbeats’ carries a sense of delightful nostalgia. It’s one of those stories that, when the last chapter ends, you wish you could keep reading.” –Sasha at KDL’s Kentwood (Richard L. Root) branch
review 2: What a beautiful love story. Julia has recently graduated from law school when her father disappears. He is Burmese and her mother is American. She discovers a love letter written to a woman named Mi Mi still living in Burma. Julia travels to Bur
... morema to unravel the mystery of why her father disappeared. While there, Julia talks with U Ba who tells her the story of her father and Mi Mi. Her father was blind as a child and Mi Mi had deformed legs. This is a most unusual love story and the cultural layer only adds to the story. I rarely read a book from cover to cover but I couldn't put it down. less

This has been a popular bookclub selection, from what I understand. So when someone in my group suggested it last April, I was happy to add it to the list. Not sure what I really think of this one because the premise that a family member has disappeared without a trace (which we learn at the outset) is so upsetting to me that I found it difficult to enjoy reading the story that unfolded. Upon reflection, I would be best served by re-reading the story knowing how it turns out. (Realistically I probably won't though.)

Oh the end. A disappointment to an otherwise beautifully conceived book
