review 1: This book had high expectations as a sequel to the art of hearing heartbeats. For me, it fell short. I think I just had a hard time getting on board with the hearing voices part of the story. And in the end the voices diminished in replace of a love story. That being said, the love story was the reason I love this book. The ideas of love, hardship, forgiveness and finding one's own freedom are some of the main reasons why this book really touched my heart.
review 2: While this book had another great "story within a story," it was not as polished a novel as "The Art of Hearing Heartbeats." It was disappointing to find out that Julie hadn't really applied anything she had learned in Burma. She had a truly empty life. The "voice" that she began to hear was, to me,
... more a contrivance that was quite implausible. I have studied psychic phenomena for many years, and the kind of telepathy that Julia was experiencing, in that she had never known or had any direct connection with the woman who was supposedly residing in her body, is not anything I've ever heard of, and made no sense. Also, the ending was disappointing in that there was no clear denouement. less
