review 1: If I could give this book a million stars then I would and I'd multiply it for 10.000. Everybody who knows me can imagine that the subject comes very close to me, I was hesitant at first because I don't like being grief stricken but I also needed to have someone wording my feelings, and man if she was spot on!The writing is so beautiful that I could highlight the whole book and then some more, she is one gifted writer and she didn't feel pretentious, she just has a magical wand on her pen....“That's exactly it—I am crazy sad, and somewhere deep inside, all I want is to fly.” Jandy Nelson Jandy Nelson > Quotes“My sister will die over and over again for the rest of my life. Grief is forever. It doesn't go away; it becomes a part of you, step for step, breath for brea... moreth. I will never stop grieving Bailey because I will never stop loving her. That's just how it is. Grief and love are conjoined, you don't get one without the other. All I can do is love her, and love the world, emulate her by living with daring and spirit and joy.”― Jandy Nelson, The Sky is Everywhere“The sky is everywhere, it begins at your feet.”― Jandy Nelson, The Sky is Everywhere“How will I survive this missing? How do others do it? People die all the time. Every day. Every hour. There are families all over the world staring at beds that are no longer slept in, shoes that are no longer worn. Families that no longer have to buy a particular cereal, a kind of shampoo. There are people everywhere standing in line at the movies, buying curtains, walking dogs, while inside, their hearts are ripping to shreds. For years. For their whole lives. I don't believe time heals. I don't want it to. If I heal, doesn't that mean I've accepted the world without her?”― Jandy Nelson, The Sky is Everywhere
review 2: [3 and a half stars.] I love Jandy Nelson's writing, and the way it creates a little world and draws you in and holds you there. I also really liked the characters in this book. But I read Nelson's more recent novel, "I'll Give You the Sun," first, and compared to that, this book felt a little more loose and disconnected. I think Nelson's voice and her storytelling were absolutely perfected in "I'll Give You the Sun," and "The Sky Is Everywhere" felt like a warm-up or a practice round. It was still enjoyable and profound, but it didn't hit me with the dead-on emotional precision that "I'll Give You the Sun" did. Also, this book was more of a love triangle story, with the romance really front and center, which isn't really my thing. If you want a more substantial, non-fluffy take on YA romance, you might like this book. less
