The Education of...
review 1: I went into this book not having a clue what it is about...not having any idea it was about a 30 year old woman and a 17 year old kid that fall in love. When I figured it out very early on...I didn't know what to think. I have a son about this age and for a lot of the first half of the book I just kept feeling conflicted with this relationship, and how Sebastian acted sometimes. But as I kept reading the story...I began to really feel for them. Both Caroline and Sebastian were broken and ultimately alone in their home lives. They truly had something special together and I began to understand it more as I kept reading this story. The story was very well developed...sometimes I felt too developed. But I really felt every emotion described in this book. I felt like I was with ... morethem on the beach, in the car, in their bedrooms, in the storeroom and in the bathroom. Sebastian’s sweet innocence was heart warming, but sometimes I felt like it was too much for him...this relationship..this love. Of course all good things come to an end and this forbidden love was discovered (finally), and things did not end well. I was heartbroken for both of them. Onto book 2.
review 2: It took me a while to build up the courage to read this book because I knew it was about forbidden love and what I was wary about was the fact that Sebastian wasn't 18 years old yet, not because of the age difference itself, and that did not bode well in terms of what the ending would be like. But once I started, I was sucked into Caroline and Sebastian's world, completely enamored with both of them and their developing relationship. It would seem like an illicit affair just at first glance, but Jane Harvey-Berrick weaves a story so beautifully that if anything, I was very much in support of Sebastian and Caroline's love for each other no matter how wrong the circumstances. Caroline is very lonely and I could really relate to her and her empty shell of a marriage to an older and very controlling man. She was basically a glorified housemaid to him and ran through the motions of each day serving him. Sebastian met Caroline when he was 8 years old and as the story progresses, it becomes painfully obvious what horrific parents he has, completely devoid of any nurturing capabilities, never mind any capacity to be role models. Caroline took an interest in him during his youth and she was probably the first person to show him any semblance of kindness that Sebastian could be on the receiving end of. Sebastian became very attached to her such that his heart broke when she moved away, maintaining an image in his head of Caroline as the most perfect woman ever. His infatuation for her did not diminish and when she moves back to California almost a decade later, Sebastian still loves her and is in love with her. Together, they find a new kind of passion for life and belief in love that neither experienced before. Sebastian was a mix of adorable, innocent, sexy, funny, endearing, caring, optimistic and unrelenting in his feelings for Caroline. He behaved very much like a typical 17 year old but he also had a mature side to him, too. Caroline enjoyed what they had at face value, afraid to consider the possibilities of more but Sebastian very much believes in their future together. I saw the conflict in Caroline very clearly, she reciprocated Sebastian's feelings, but was scared to admit them because if there was ever a fall-out or discovery of their affair, the aftermath would ruin her. At the same time, she had never felt more alive or in control of her life because of Sebastian's unconditional love and support. She was beginning to take a stand for herself and prioritize her needs after being belittled throughout her whole life by her mother and husband. She was starting to take risks and contemplate a future where she could apply her writing skills. Caroline has a very independent personality smothered into dependency so as her real self emerges, she becomes stronger. I absolutely adored Sebastian. He had so much love to give for someone who received so little of it and he was still so full of compassion and good humor. He wanted to impress Caroline and he also had the curious innocence coupled with the shyness and hesitancy of a teenager growing into a man. Their story touched my heart and by the end, I wanted to believe that they could have a happy future together no matter what the obstacles were. less
