review 1: I was so excited to be back in Morocco with Jane Johnson, and this book didn't disappoint. I am really loving her work, and it is because you can actually hear the call to prayers, smell the spices and aromatics, feel the heat of the desert and know you have been transported. If I had to choose my favourite book by Jane Johnson it would have to be The Tenth Gift, as it wove its exotic thread 400 years apart. These books have opened up a longing now to visit Morocco.
review 2: The parallel stories of two women, set in the north African desert; independent and successful Isabel on an unexpected journey of self discovery and Mariata, a Tuareg woman. The vivid descriptions of the desert landscape are worthy of any travelogue and the story includes fascinating hi... morestorical and geo-political detail. It seems well researched, no doubt aided by the author's personal connection to the region and its people. The resolution of how the stories merge is left until the end of the book and kept me guessing.A satisfying read. less
