review 1: Unexpectedly a beautiful read and an interesting one at that. picking this book up at a bargain sale, I wasn't too keen on starting it. But it pleasantly surprised me. with the clever writing style and a carefully set out tale, the salt road is one to treasure. I had been craving for a good historical fiction/ adventure book at the time that I had picked it up I was intent on finding an enchanting tale with the most beautiful characters and the book didn't disappoint me at all. Being a Muslim myself, I carry a fair share of my knowledge in the Bedouins, nomads, tribes and the history of the deserts. I live in the Middle-East as well which also widens my knowledge a bit more. I'd have to admit I didn't find Izzy that appealing at the beginning but she became a lot more ea... moresier to handle later. Mariata, on the other hand fascinated me. The story definitely picks up a lot more deeper in the story, with it's beautiful poetry, interesting characters, unexpected plot-twists and the setting in itself. I, myself have never come across a historical fiction set in such an exotic and interesting setting such as Morocco/the Sahara desert. Especially for people living in the west, this story would entice them of life in the desert and the cultures and ways of the desert tribes. No matter who you are, if you're looking for a beautiful story with the slightest touch of a fairy-tale, then the stories of Isabelle Treslove-Fawcett and Mariata-ult-yemma will entice you and envelope you in a cocoon of warmth :)
review 2: Read the first 90 pages and realised that the book was going nowhere fast. Well, it was going somewhere, but boringly so and at a snail's pace. It sounded like it was going to be a fast-moving, thrilling mystery with with well-drawn characters and a setting that interested me. It was not - it dragged through pages and pages of description which, in the end, became something of a non-relevance. The main characters were cardboard cut outs, the others oddly did not materialise in any distinct form; and the Moroccan setting, though at first interesting, became just an intrusion .... dozens of pages on the desert was a joke.I've not enough life left to waste - so this book goes straight into my 'dumped' file. less
