review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Nice for holiday reading because it is about nice people in real situations...nothing over the top or in your face. Good to read that sometimes. This is the continuing story of a group of "church ladies", The Widows, and their plans to get there young unmarried pastor involved with a suitable lady and thereby get him married and filling the parsonage with little ones. I like the down to earth portrayal of the young minister. He does not walk on water, simply lives his faith. This the second in the series and I am looking forward to the 3rd in the series, the Wedding Planners of Butternut Creek.
review 2: In the small town of Butternut Creek, Texas, a group of elderly ladies, known as the Widows have made it their personal c... morehallenge to find a suitable wife for the new young pastor, Adam Jordan. The challenge is that most of the young, single women have either married already or there are one or two remaining that don't seem to be interested in Adam at all. But make no mistake, they aren't about to give up, even if it means sitting in the pastor's office every morning to consult with him on his love life. The Widows are the ones in the community who see to it that the food pantry is well stocked, that the sick are ministered to, the fundraisers are successful and most of all oversee the love life of all the town's residents. They have been fairly successful up until now. When a likely candidate is found in college freshman, Gussie Milton, the Widows get to work making arrangements for the two to have time to get to know one another, to socialize and to see that love is a possibility for them both. But as the Pastor sees it, their plans for him is to attend a Youth Outing over the upcoming weekend, fall in love on Friday, get married and have children on the way by Sunday. Don't this well-meaning ladies know that love takes time? Will they become more of a problem than a solution? Or will Pastor Jordan and Gussie finally see that despite all the well intentions of the Widows, that they only want them to find what they have had until their own husbands passed away. That love is the best treasure on Earth or at least in Butternut Creek. I received The Matchmakers of Butternut Creek by Jane Myers Perrine compliments of Faith Words, a division on Hachette Book Groups for my honest review. I honestly felt sorry for Pastor Adam Jordan most of the time, because these elderly ladies with the best of intentions didn't realize how much they were actually interfering in the process for Adam and Gussie to see qualities in one another that would inspire their own feelings to follow. It seemed like every time Adam turned around the Widows were waiting for him in his office to grill him over what he had done, how he was feeling and probing for all the intimate details. Their desire for him to experience love and marriage like they had, seemed to overlap Adams own need for a personal life in finding his own happiness. It was delightful, warm-hearted and truly a novel that was fun to read. I kept thinking of the ring leader of the Widows, Miss Birdie as the actress Shirley McLane or Olympia Dukakis! Funny how that happens. If you love small town contemporary love stories with a bit of humor, you'll want to pick this one up. I rate it a 4 out of 5 stars. The Matchmakers of Butternut Creek picks up where the first book The Welcome Committee of Butternut Creek leaves off. less
