review 1: It's a little bit of a cheat to put this in "alternate history," but I'm putting it there, since it takes place during the Civil War and it involves magic and supernatural elements in the story, but it's still very much a historical fiction story. I really enjoyed this book - I loved the characters and I loved the setting. Violet is a wonderful narrator! Everything that she talked about felt very realistic. Also, one of my favorite characters was Sunny Sluder, which surprised me. At first, I thought Sunny was just going to be this one-note Scarlett O'Hara knock-off, but as the story progressed, there turned out to be more to her than being prim and proper (though that aspect of her character never went away). The twists and turns of the story and all the plotlines made for... more a fantastic read - haunting and beautiful and all of my favorite things in this kind of paranormal historical fiction (I think there's definitely a market for this genre and I'd like to see more from it).
review 2: I'm unfamiliar with the tale of Tam Lin, of which this novel is said to be a retelling. I read any novel for a fresh story rather than for a retelling, and even if I am familiar with the original, I don't make a comparison. I think I enjoy more novels that way, and I did enjoy reading this one. Because of the back cover copy, I expected the wounded soldier to appear earlier than he did, but anticipating that event made me keep reading. This is a story that was hard to put down in order to go to sleep at night. less
