review 1: Oh beautiful cover how you lured me in.This was, interesting. I am always falling for fairy tale retellings and this one definitely seemed like it was going to be dark and mysterious. OK. So the main character, Sophia, was a good character. She was nice and kind but she was also strong and determined. When things started to come together at the end she was brave enough to face it. Bluebeard. Or M. Bernard. He was... disturbing. Right from the start he felt off (although coming into this knowing of the Bluebeard tale probably prejudiced me slightly). Sophia fell for him though. Her attitude regarding him was the only part where she seemed to become a little weak. She excused so much at the beginning because he was handsome and charming and adored her. And then she failed to... more see so many signs that showed the mystery of his previous wives. He was a very scary character. Not least because he was very real. He is every abusive boyfriend. There was a romance in this book with a man she meets. His behaviour through the book was a little (and I hate to say it) wimpy. He fails to see Sophia's distress, or that she might be in danger. It was refreshing to see a girl save herself but still. He did however provide her with a distraction for a while which helped her cope with everything that was happening. Her siblings were a little self absorbed. She says that they have spent their lives caring for her but there was very little evidence of that. There was a lot of them pressuring her into being with M. Bernard and then a lot of them dumping their problems on her. I would love to see more development with them. Where do they go? What do they wind up doing? I'm fairly sure this is a stand alone novel but I can see opportunities for companion novels. Plus, I'd love to see Sophia in a (hopefully happy) future. Overall, this book wasn't everything I expected from it. Which is fair enough, I think I set my expectations a little high. However, I liked the characters and it definitely made the time and the location seem real. I really liked the look at slavery at the time as well and it certainly helped me dislike M. Bernard faster.
review 2: This story is twisted and slightly disturbing, but also enjoyable and a quick read. (it took me a while to get into, but once I did, I read most of it in a day)Sophie is a 17 year old girl whose father has recently died. She goes to live with her godfather in Mississippi who was an associate of her father's after the funeral. Things seem to be going well until Sophie notices her godfather, Bernard, becoming more possessive of her and having severe mood swings. Sophie comes to realize that something is not quite right with Bernard and becomes entangled in a frightening trap. One of the things that struck me about this book is how we, as readers, are able to see just how bad Bernard's actions are. Without the emotions that Sophie is feeling to cloud judgement, it's easy to be like, "Hello, that is not healthy behaviour. He's emotionally manipulating you and he's emotionally abusing you, get out! Stop trying to please him!!!" But I think Jane Nickerson does a good job of explaining the rationalizing that Sophie goes through. As an observer, it's frustrating to not be able to do anything (like shake the stupid people), but it also gives you a glimpse into how it might feel for real world abuse victims and why it's so hard to leave. Overall, I liked this book, though it was a little tough to get into. There's a little mystery, a little horror, a little supernatural, and just the right amount of romance. less
