review 1: Enjoyed a lot of this - gorgeous imagery and a very interesting, unusual heroine. A few sentences struck home (like how she always knew she was destined for luxury and how her family was only genteel in theory which led to frustration) and part of he mystery remains unresolved (was it magic?) but the pervading aftertaste of upcoming sexual abuse throughout made me nauseous and prevented me from enjoyed all the beautiful luxuries (which is the point of the book of course). Very interesting depiction of the villain as a slave owner so the heroine gets mixed up with the Underground Railroad. Very deeply disturbing themes wrapped in threads of gold. It was a very odd experience overall.
review 2: I had read the original fairytale "Bluebeard", which was scary and cr
... moreeepy, and this revisiting of it in the deep South (Louisiana) during the Civil War era was...interesting. It didn't blow me away and, unfortunately, the climax fell short for me (comparing it to the original probably didn't help in that regard), but I would recommend this read for a historical fiction reader and a reader of novels set in the South. less

Solid 3.5 stars. I think I over-hyped this one all on my own, unfortunately. Review to come.

There was nothing wrong or infuriating about this book. I just thought it was boring.
